Why Support Local Artisan Artist & Makers

Having run Inspire Makers, an independent artisan shop in Falmouth, Cornwall, for almost five years now and co-founded FORM Art Festival, I like to think I’ve got my ear to the ground when it comes to emerging and established creatives.

I’m also a maker myself, my studio is at the back of Inspire Makers and when the closed sign is on the door, I retreat to my fused glass and silver clay jewellery practices. So I’m very lucky that this vibrant community of Cornish artists is one that I’m part of, both professionally and personally. Lucky lady, hey?

This is why I know how important it is to support local artisans, and by sharing their work we help their businesses to grow and ultimately survive. Which is no mean feat in today’s climate.

Without a crew of artists and makers, our communities would be very different. Our artworks, interiors, and homewares would all be an identical mass-produced sea of beige, and we’d lack the means to express our own personality in our spaces.

It saddens me to think of this happening, and that’s why I fight so hard to champion Cornish artists and provide our customers with a platform to buy beautiful jewellery, ceramics, homewares, and artworks that are of such high quality. And they happen to be made right here in Cornwall.

The following artisans are our ones to watch…

1. Daisy Dunlop

Jeweller Daisy Dunlop creates beautiful silver jewellery from her purpose built home studio in Cornwall. With over 20 years experience, Daisy has meticulously refined her skills and nurtured a unique style – which has seen her become one of the most sought after jewellers in the county.

Her tactile silver jewellery is organic in form, inspired by the rugged Cornish coastline, and she uses layers of precious metals, enamel, and gemstones to create jewellery that looks as though it belongs in the landscape, both eroded and submerged over time.

Each silver ring, necklace, and bangle is made by hand and is one-of-a-kind. Daisy was once concerned she’d run out of ideas to develop, but in reality her work changes year on year, just as this coastline that inspires her does. That said, there are strong themes and motifs of nature running throughout her work.

If you like handmade silver jewellery, that connects you to nature – wearing a piece by Daisy will put a smile on your face for years to come. A truly worthwhile investment piece.

2. Louisa Ellis

Printmaker Louisa Ellis is one of the most popular printmakers in Cornwall, her artwork captures the wildlife of Cornwall so perfectly, and once you hear about her printmaking technique you will be blown away.

Louisa uses a traditional woodblock printing method to build up a rustic, high-contrast quality to her work, with the distinctive grain of the wood giving extra depth and showing her maker’s mark. We don’t want to give away her secrets – but understanding how these artworks are made is part of what makes them so magical.

Louisa has developed a method which involves drawing directly onto a sheet of plywood and cutting a key block from this drawing. Louisa then prints this onto the reverse side of the plywood and cuts out the sections to be printed in colour. She prints her work using linseed oil-based inks and burnishes by hand with a Japanese brand.

This is a traditional technique that dates back centuries. It’s got an incredibly rich legacy, and it’s fantastic to see contemporary printmakers harness it to depict our Cornish landscape and wildlife today.

Having initially studied art and exhibited her artworks over twenty years, Louisa quickly took on a teaching job to help support her young family. After two decades as a primary school teacher, Louisa is now realising her dream and working as a full-time printmaker. Good things come to those who wait!

3. Lucie Sivicka

Czech potter Lucie Sivicka is one of the biggest names at Inspire Makers, and we are so proud to showcase her work. Her whimsical, hand-painted mugs, vases, and plates are inspired by the outdoor swimming community in her hometown of Penzance, and she creates them just down the road in her Newlyn studio.

Outdoor swimming is absolutely brilliant for boosting your mood, and Cornwall is full of hardy swimmers who take you to the shore all year round. Rather them than me! Lucie is particularly inspired by how sea swimming brings women together, and we love how she paints these ladies we know and love in polka-dot, brightly coloured swimsuits. These ceramics are a thing of joy, and often fly off the shelves before I share them on our platforms!

Although her inspiration and studio in a small Cornish fishing might sound quaint, Lucie’s love of pottery and her success is anything but. Having studied at the Czech Republic’s premiere art and ceramic school, she then worked for companies in Prague making pottery, whilst also building her own practice. She also held workshops with the elderly in hospitals, and children in orphanages, passing on her love of the craft and the therapeutic nature of the pottery process.

4. Silver Sapling

Creating silver jewellery from their studio in West Penwith, Lucy and Ben are the partnership behind Silver Sapling – a luxury jewellery brand producing handmade sterling silver jewellery in Cornwall.

Their personal story is a romantic one, and what’s more romantic than gifting or buying yourself beautiful jewellery – so it’s a match made in heaven!

Having trained as a silversmith in her home county of East Sussex, Lucy’s long-term passion for jewellery was combined with the skills to create her own jewellery with her own unique style. Deciding it was time for a new adventure, she came to Cornwall, and settled on the Isles of Scilly with her partner Ben. We’re jealous too… The Isles of Scilly are spectacularly beautiful, and it’s hard not to feel inspired by the golden beaches and exposure to the elements.

Ben soon joined the business, bringing his own skills and approach, and Silver Sapling blossomed under the two of them.

Inspired by their surroundings, the iconic agapanthus, rolling waves, and crusty barnacles, the jewellers soaked up nature’s mark, and let this influence their collections. As a result, their sterling silver jewellery feels incredibly authentic to Cornwall and is a way to connect to the landscape we know and love.

5. Lazique

If you’re seeking unique artwork that makes a statement and is truly innovative, I’m very pleased to introduce you to 3D laser-cutting artist Tom, who works under the name ‘Lazique’. WIth a background in Graphic Design, his expert eye is fascinated by geometric patterns and the number sequences found in the natural world.

It’s such a refreshing approach when many Cornish seascapes are fluid and hand drawn, capturing the movement in a looser way. Variety is the spice of life, and Tom’s intricately measured and carefully composed artworks offer something new – they capture dynamic movements in a frozen split second, and the beauty of this.

3D laser cut art combines innovation and precision, and the works created have a depth to them that catches the light beautifully. The tonal blue and green colour palette works to create a harmonious scene, that oozes calmness. Lazique’s work has pride of place at Inspire Makers, and it’s a pleasure to be surrounded by, they are serene in an often hectic shop!

So there we have it! Our insight into some of the best artists and makers in Cornwall right now.

Supporting local artists and makers not only helps preserve Cornwall’s rich creative heritage but also nurtures the talent that often goes unnoticed. These artisans pour their heart and soul into their craft, and by embracing their work, you’re helping keep this vibrant community thriving.

It’s a privilege to share the stories and creations of these exceptional Cornish artists, and I hope you’ve enjoyed discovering them as much as I have. Don’t miss out—get to know their work before it’s gone!
