Cornish Paper Cut Art

Debs Martin started Cornish Paper Cut Art in 2013 after completing a UAL Diploma in Art and Design in Nottingham as a mature student. Moving to Cornwall inspired her to start designing paper cut artwork.

The graphic style of Cornish Paper Cut Art is vibrant in colour. Her main body of work is a grid style repeat design that has colours laid out in a specific way to encourage the viewer to scan across the colours. It was also designed to bring colour to neutral walls in the home.

Cornish Paper Cut Art has appeared on the front cover of Cornwall Living and The Fowey Festival of Arts & Literature, with features in local magazines. Debs has a regular customer base who collect pieces so she regularly creates new themes and bespoke work.

What is the history of papercut art?

Papercut art has a rich history that spans centuries and cultures. The earliest known examples of papercutting date back to China during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE), where skilled artists created intricate designs using sharp knives or scissors. In Europe, paper cutting gained popularity during the 16th century as a decorative art form for windows and doors. In the 19th century, papercut art became popular in countries such as Germany and Switzerland, where it was used to decorate everyday objects such as furniture and clothing. Today, papercutting continues to be a beloved art form, with contemporary artists pushing the boundaries of what is possible with paper, scissors, and a keen eye for design.
