Description
For those with some experience in jewellery making, this 4 week course covers tools, finishes and an introduction to silver clay.
Friday mornings from 9.30am to 12noon – you must be able to attend all 4 sessions.
– 23 February
– 1 March
– 8 March
– 15 March
What will I learn?
The four sessions focus on learning new skills that you can incorporate into your own jewellery making. There is time for you to turn some of your work into finished items of jewellery but the focus will be on learning new tools and techniques rather than making finished pieces of jewellery. You can attend an additional Maker’s Club session at a reduced rate if you wish to finish off pieces using the studio tools.
Week 1: Die-cut and Doming
How to use tools to cut shapes and form metal
Week 2: Reticulation & Wire manipulation using a vice
Learn the technique of reticulation to create texture. Ways to use your vice to add detail and interest to wire.
Week 3: Silver Clay
An introduction to using this medium with guest tutor Vicki from Article Jewellery. You will be shown how to hand-fire your work so that you can continue at home without the need for a kiln.
Week 4: Enamel
Application of powdered enamel and hand-firing so that you can continue at home without a kiln.
What do I need to bring?
The cost of the workshop covers all materials required* as well as tea, coffee, soft drinks etc.
Don’t forget your reading glasses if you need them as there is a lot of close up work!
*The following materials are included to practice using the tools. In sessions where we are using copper, you can buy silver at cost price or you can bring your own.
1: Copper sheet (50x50mm)
2: Sterling Silver Sheet (60 x 60mm) & Copper Wire
3: 10g Sterling Silver Clay
4: Enamel & Copper sheet and pre-cut copper shapes
During the sessions you can also ask about tools, equipment and suppliers if you wish to continue with what you have learnt outside of the classes.
What should I wear?
Due to the nature of the tools and materials used in the class you are required to wear sturdy, closed toed shoes. Hair must be tied back and please do not wear loose clothing or scarves; you may not want to get your nails done before the session!
Strictly no alcohol to be consumed before or during the workshop.
Making a gift
If you intend to make your piece as a gift for someone else, you will need to know the ring size or bangle size prior to the session. Sizes cannot be changed after the class. Bangle size information can be found here: porthjewellery.com/faqs/
