Description

Unleash your creativity and craft a truly personal piece of jewellery in this hands-on Lost Wax Carving Workshop. You’ll design and carve your very own band ring from a block of hard wax — a traditional technique used by jewellers for centuries.

Unlike soft wax and spirit lamp build-up methods, this session uses precision hand tools and files, allowing for intricate patterns, textures, and forms up to 0.8mm in width.

If you’d like to create a particularly chunky piece, you’re welcome to cover the price difference on the day, based on the final weight of your ring.

No previous experience needed — just bring your ideas and curiosity.

What will I learn?

You’ll learn the fundamentals of hard wax carving for jewellery through designing and carving your own unique band ring using professional tools.

After the workshop

After the session, your wax prototype will be sent to a professional casting service in Birmingham, where it will be cast in solid sterling silver 925. Once returned, Tamara will clean up and finish your ring in your preferred style — choose from satin, oxidized, or high-polish. This process takes some time and your finished ring will ready in about 3 weeks. You will then be notified when it is ready for collection or we can post to you (at additional cost).

What do I need to bring?

The cost of the workshop covers tuition and all materials required as well as tea, coffee, soft drinks etc. It includes casting into silver, and finishing.

Don’t forget your reading glasses if you need them as there is a lot of close up work!

What should I wear?

Due to the nature of the tools and materials used in the class you are required to wear sturdy, closed toed shoes. Hair must be tied back and please do not wear loose clothing or scarves; you may not want to get your nails done before the session! Aprons are provided.

About your tutor

Tamara Gervasio, the creative force behind TG Jewellery is a true master of the lost wax carving technique. She studied for five years as a sculptor at the Institute of Art, then spent two years specialising as a wax carver and goldsmith in Rome. She moved to London in 1998 and has collaborated with many other goldsmiths and fashion designers such as Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood. Her focus is lost wax and all her pieces are hand-carved from a block of wax, using artisan tools that allow precise details for carving. TG Jewellery designs are based on the principles of repeated regular and irregular patterns.
