Karen Hemsley-Biggs

Karen has lived in Cornwall since 2002. In 2018 she started to play with watercolours and drawing in permanent pen, gaining confidence in mark making. Having made lots of drawings of the local area Karen wanted to explore acrylics for a bolder end result. This took some time and patience as the medium was completely new to her, however she was determined to find her own way. Painting is now very much a pleasure and a huge part of her life.

Inspired by her beautiful surroundings on The Helford River and around the Cornish coast, Karen feels compelled to express the joy in what she sees and how she sees it. Gently pushing shapes and colours to enhance how a view captures her, Karen’s paintings start out with a sketch to determine what is important and realise what it is she wants it to say. Initial marks are made with watercolour pencils to map out the composition. Shapes and patterns are then defined by slowly building thicker layers,

Beautifully Bold & Bright Coastal Paintings

Karen’s bold and graphic depictions of her local surroundings are instantly recognisable. The use of strong blues and greens give a sense of bright sunny days on the beautiful Helford River, with her favourite places often painted from memory.
